1 Reading — E12.8.R1 R1
Students will be able to summarize a reading passage about alternative energy.
Read the text below and answer the questions about alternative energy sources.
The Rise of Alternative Energy
As the world faces the growing threat of climate change, the need for sustainable energy sources has never been more urgent. For decades, fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas have been the primary sources of energy. However, burning these fuels releases massive amounts of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, causing global temperatures to rise and leading to severe environmental problems.

Fortunately, renewable energy sources offer a cleaner and more eco-friendly alternative. Solar energy, captured through panels that convert sunlight into electricity, is one of the fastest-growing energy sectors in the world. Wind energy, generated by large turbines, is another powerful option that produces zero pollution during operation. Geothermal energy, which uses heat from deep within the Earth, provides a stable and continuous source of power. Hydropower, generated by the movement of water through dams and rivers, has been used for centuries and remains one of the most reliable renewable sources.

Scientists and governments agree that shifting away from fossil fuels and investing in renewable energy is essential for a sustainable future. Among all these options, many experts suggest that solar energy is the most promising because it is widely available, increasingly affordable, and can be installed almost anywhere — from rooftops to deserts. As technology improves, the cost of generating clean energy continues to fall, making a green future more achievable than ever.
  1. a Summarize the main idea of the passage in 2–3 sentences.
  2. b According to the text, what are the advantages of renewable energy over fossil fuels?
  3. c Which alternative energy source does the writer suggest is most promising? Why?
2 Reading — E12.8.R2 R2
Students will be able to analyze a reading passage to find out solutions to environmental problems.
Read the text below and answer the questions about environmental problems and their solutions.
Protecting Our Planet: Problems and Solutions
The Earth is facing several serious environmental problems that threaten the future of life on our planet. Three of the most urgent issues are deforestation, pollution, and global warming. If we do not take action soon, the damage may become impossible to reverse.

Deforestation — the large-scale cutting down of forests — destroys natural habitats and reduces the planet’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide. One key solution is to replace the trees we cut down by planting new ones, and to reduce our consumption of disposable paper and wood products. Governments should also protect existing forests by creating national parks and wildlife reserves.

Pollution is another major threat. Factories manufacture goods that we use daily, but the waste they produce poisons our air, water, and soil. To fight pollution, we must reduce the overuse of non-renewable resources and invest in cleaner infrastructure. Individuals can help by cutting down on disposable plastic and choosing eco-friendly alternatives.

Global warming, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, is perhaps the greatest threat of all. Our finite supply of fossil fuels cannot be replenished once they are used up, and burning them rapidly accelerates climate change. The most effective solution is to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal power. Every step we take today matters for tomorrow.
  1. a What are the three main problems mentioned in the text?
  2. b What solutions does the writer propose for each problem?
  3. c Which solution do you think is the most effective? Give a reason.
Her paragrafta farklı bir çevre sorunu ele alınıyor. Üç ana sorunu bulmak için ilk paragraftaki “Three of the most urgent issues” ifadesine bak. Çözümleri ararken “solution”, “replace”, “reduce” gibi anahtar kelimelere dikkat et. Son soru için kendi görüşünü “I think ... because ...” kalıbıyla yaz.
3 Writing — E12.8.W1 W1
Students will be able to write an email/a letter of complaint to a local authority about an environmental problem to suggest solutions.
Read the model complaint email below. Then write your own formal email of complaint (10–12 sentences) to the mayor about an environmental problem in your city.
Model Email
Dear Mayor,

I am writing to express my complaint about the increasing air pollution in our neighbourhood. As a resident, I have noticed that the waste from nearby factories has been affecting the quality of our air rapidly. This pollution is causing health problems among the elderly and children. I urge the municipality to inspect these factories and take urgent action to reduce emissions. I believe that investing in better waste management would greatly benefit our community.

Yours sincerely,
A Concerned Resident
Your task: Write a formal email of complaint (10–12 sentences) to the mayor of your city about an environmental problem. Your email should include:
Opening: State who you are and why you are writing (1–2 sentences)
Problem: Describe the environmental problem in detail (3–4 sentences)
Effects: Explain how it affects the residents (2–3 sentences)
Solutions: Suggest at least two solutions (2–3 sentences)
Closing: End politely and request action (1 sentence)

Try to use these words: mayor, municipality, resident, complaint, urgent, pollution, waste, deficit, rapidly
Resmi şikâyet e-postası yazarken “Dear Mayor” ile başla ve “Yours sincerely” ile bitir. Kendinizi tanıtın (“I am a resident of ...”), sorunu açıkça betimleyin, etkilerini anlatın ve çözüm önerin. Resmi dil kullanın: kısaltma yapmayın (“don’t” yerine “do not”), “I would like to”, “I urge”, “I kindly request” gibi ifadeler tercih edin.
4 Writing — E12.8.W2 W2
Students will be able to write their opinions about the usage of alternative energy.
Read the model opinion paragraph below. Then write your own opinion text (8–10 sentences) about why Turkey should invest more in alternative energy.
Model Opinion Paragraph
In my opinion, alternative energy is the key to a cleaner future. Currently, most countries still depend on coal, natural gas, and oil to generate electricity. However, these sources are not only harmful but also finite. Governments should invest in solar and wind energy because they are renewable and sustainable. The sooner we make the switch, the better our chances of protecting the environment.
Your task: Write an opinion text (8–10 sentences) about why Turkey should invest more in alternative energy. Your text should include:
Introduction: State your opinion clearly (1–2 sentences)
Reasons: Give at least two reasons with examples (4–5 sentences)
Counterargument: Address a possible opposing view (1–2 sentences)
Conclusion: Summarise your opinion (1 sentence)

Try to use these words: nuclear, biomass, turbine, stable, source, coal, natural gas, oil, rapidly, currently
Görüş yazısına “In my opinion” veya “I strongly believe” ile başla. Gerekçelerini “First of all”, “Secondly” gibi sıralama bağlaçlarıyla sun. Karşıt görüşü “Some people may argue that ...” ile ele al ve “However” ile çürüt. “Nuclear”, “biomass”, “turbine”, “coal” gibi enerji kelimelerini metne yerleştir. Sonuç bölümünde “In conclusion” ile özetle.
