The Life of Aziz Sancar
Aziz Sancar was born in 1946 in Savur, Mardin. He was the seventh of eight children in his family. After he had finished primary school in Savur, he moved to Istanbul to attend high school. He then studied medicine at Istanbul University and graduated in 1969.
After he had worked as a rural doctor for two years, Sancar decided to pursue a career in science. He moved to the United States in 1973 to study molecular biology. Before he received his Nobel Prize, he had spent decades researching how cells repair damaged DNA. His groundbreaking work earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2015.
Sancar has always been proud of his Turkish roots. After he had received the Nobel Prize, he donated his medal to the Mardin Museum. He often says that hard work and curiosity are the keys to success.

Nene Hatun: A Symbol of Courage
Nene Hatun was born in 1857 in Erzurum. She grew up in a humble family and got married at a very young age. In 1877, when the Ottoman–Russian War broke out, the Russian army attacked the Erzurum fortress. Nene Hatun, who was only twenty years old at the time, joined the defence of the city.
Before the battle had started, she had gathered other women from the neighbourhood to help the soldiers. During the fight, she showed incredible bravery. After the war had ended, she continued to live a quiet life in Erzurum. She passed away in 1955 at the age of 97.
After she had passed away, the Turkish government named many schools, parks and streets after her to honour her courage. Today, Nene Hatun is remembered as one of the greatest heroines in Turkish history.

Model Essay
Yunus Emre was one of the most important poets and thinkers in Turkish history. He was born in the 13th century in Anatolia. Before he became famous, he had studied under the Sufi master Taptuk Emre for many years. After he had completed his education, he travelled across Anatolia and shared his poems with people from all walks of life.
Yunus Emre’s poems focused on love, tolerance and humanity. He wrote in simple Turkish so that everyone could understand his message. His most famous works are still read and quoted today. After he had passed away around 1321, his legacy continued to grow. Today, he is considered one of the greatest poets of the Turkish language.
